The penetrative process of nurtiBASE™ and nurtiBASE LITE™ will force direct dye (Artisan and any other non-oxidative direct dye) from the cuticle layer, causing it to prematurely fade.
PROTREATMENT for DIRECT DYE
Follow all of the steps of application for a standard PROTREATMENT, using colorELIXIR™ at a 1:2 mixing ratio. Finish with SEALANT™ to lock in treatment benefits.
Q: Why does the hair sometimes feel dry after I blow-dry a PROTREATMENT?
A: Hair that has experienced extreme damage from lightener or other oxidative services can be very fragile. A damageREMEDY™ service will instantly improve the integrity of the hair strand and infuse moisture and shine. Keep in mind that the hair has been compromised, so it is advised to turn the heat down to medium on your blow dryer, and reduce tension on the hair while using SEALANT™. PROTREATMENT is a conditioning treatment and SEALANT™ will simply lock the treatment into the hair. It is much thinner than a keratin treatment so excessive heat is not necessary or recommended.
Q: How much should I charge for a PROTREATMENT?
A:This is a premium service, and you should charge accordingly. Look at what you are currently charging for a conditioning treatment and add an additional 25 to 45 percent (depending on your market).
Q: Can I use a prep or style product with SEALANT™?
A: It is not recommended. Using any prep or style product with (or under) SEALANT™ will block its effects.
Q: How long does a PROTREATMENT take to perform?
A: Depending on application speed and the blow-dry time needed – the service should take between 35 and 55 minutes.

If adding a PROTREATMENT onto another service, allow an additional 20 to 30 minutes to the total service time (assuming the shampoo and blow-dry time is already accounted for in the other service).
Q: Can I use more than one base booster in my formula?
A: Technically yes but doing so dilutes the results. If there are two concerns, use twice as much base booster for the primary concern in your formulation. For example, for average length hair, you would use 2-pumps of the primary base booster and 1-pump secondary base booster.
Q: Can I use the nurtriBASE™ alone?
A: You can, nutriBASE™ is an excellent shine booster. With that in mind, the real magic of a PROTREATMENT comes in the customized treatment of adding a booster.
Q: Why do I have to use heat? What if I don’t have a dryer or heat lamp?
A: The heat process helps soften the treatment so that it can absorb deep into the cortex of the hair (think of softening chocolate so that it can flow). The cooling process then allows the treatment to stay in the hair to work its magic. If you don’t have a hooded dryer or a heat lamp, you can wrap the head in a heated towel. If that isn’t possible, you MUST leave the treatment on for a minimum of 20 minutes and make sure it’s not too cool in the salon. Consider warming the head with a blow dryer set on low.
Q: How do I add this service to a haircut appointment?
A: Remember, this is an add on service (not a service booster). There are two options for adding the PROTREATMENT to a haircut service.
Option 1: Add the service onto the end of the haircut.
Option 2: Start the appointment with the first two steps of the PROTREATMENT.
- Pre-cleanse,
- Apply the treatment and process, then rinse with warm water. Comb through the hair and proceed with the cut. If you need to use a cutting lotion or Sculpture & Illuminate (you may not need it), rinse after the cut with lukewarm (slightly cool) water. Towel dry, apply SEALANT™ and blow-dry as directed.
Q: How do I add this service onto a color appointment?
A: Add the PROTREATMENT to the end of your color service. Do NOT do the treatment before an oxidative service as this will strip the treatment from the hair. After all processing, rinse hair thoroughly and proceed with the treatment as directed.
NOTE: URGENT REPAIR SHAMPOO will not remove oxidative color from the hair.
Q: Can I do a PROTREATMENT after an Artisan (direct dye) application?
A: No. The treatment penetrates the cortex of the hair, forcing direct dye molecules out (causing fadeage). Offer a colorELIXIR™ PROTREATMENT color locking service as an alternative:
- Combine 1-part chemical service additive Step-1 to 2-parts chemical service sealer Step 2.
- Apply the treatment and process using the same steps as outlined for the other PROTREATMENT application technique steps.
TIP: Apply SEALANT™ to hair prior to blow-dry to extend the benefits of the service (do not use any other prep or style products prior to the blow-dry).
Q: Can I do a PROTREATMENT during an Artisan (direct dye) service?
A: Yes. If your guest would benefit from a PROTREATMENT, do steps 1 and 2 prior to the direct dye application (after pre-lightening or before a refresh or Artisan Float).
- Pre-cleanse with URGENT REPAIR SHAMPOO.
- Apply the treatment and process, then rinse with warm water.
- Apply your direct dye formula and process as usual.
- Rinse hair thoroughly with lukewarm (slightly cool) water and towel dry.
Apply SEALANT™ and blow-dry as directed.
